I love pomegranate juice, so I tried to cram as much as I could into this margarita. So much so that maybe “margarita-flavored pomegranate juice” would be a better title…. Either way, this pomegranate margarita is packed with pomegranate juice and accented with lime juice, tequila, and triple sec.
Traditional margaritas have a much higher ratio of triple sec to tequila and lime juice, but in this case, it started to clash with the pomegranate juice (just like in a pomegranate cosmopolitan). Instead, I call for a little more pomegranate juice and a little less triple sec to make sure everything gets along nicely. The result is a sweet and fruity cocktail with a strong pomegranate flavor. Add a salt or sugar rim for extra oomph!

Ingredients for Pomegranate Margarita
I love pomegranate margaritas for the pomegranate flavor first and foremost, but they’re also pretty easy to put together with just a few ingredients. And you don’t need to have simple syrup on hand! I use the following ingredients to make my margaritas. See each bullet point for substitutions and recommendations.
- Pomegranate juice. I tend to use bottled pomegranate juice for ease (and because I go through so much of it)! Make sure it’s 100% pomegranate juice for the best flavor.
- Tequila. I use tequila anejo because that’s what we normally have on hand, but blanco or reposado are even better for margaritas!
- Triple sec. This orange liqueur adds a bit of sweetness to the margarita. Too much can start to muddy the flavors, but a small amount is perfect to balance the drink.
- Lime juice. Freshly squeezed lime juice will give you the best flavor.
For serving:
- Salt or sugar. I usually do a sugar rim for my drinks and a salt rim for my husband’s. I just love sweet things.
- Pomegranate arils. They’ll sink to the bottom of your glass unless you have a solid layer of ice to hold them up. But they’ll infuse over time, and you’ll have some boozy pomegranate arils at the bottom of your glass for a little snack once you’re done.
- Lime wedges or wheels. I tend to use lime wedges myself, but both work nicely. The wedges are easier to run around the rim of a glass.
- Ice. Margaritas are best served on the rocks, so use plenty of ice to keep the drink chilled!

Quick Tips for Prepping Pomegranate Margaritas
This pomegranate margarita comes together quickly with little fuss. Simply mix pomegranate juice, tequila, triple sec, and lime juice in a shaker with ice, then pour into a salt- or sugar-rimmed glass. Top with a few pomegranate arils and a lime wedge or wheel, and you have yourself a wintery margarita. (Or a margarita for any season, really!)
Here are a few suggestions to help you make this pomegranate margarita your own:
- Use anywhere from 2-4 ounces of pomegranate juice for your preferred level of pomegranate flavor.
- Use a shaker to thoroughly mix the drink together.
- Add a salt or sugar rim by rubbing a lime wedge along the rim of the glass, then dipping it into salt or sugar.
- Serve this pomegranate cocktail in a standard margarita glass, coupe glass, or old fashioned glass. You just want something with a wide rim!
- Freshly squeezed lime juice will give you the best flavor, but you can use bottled lime juice if you’re in a pinch.

Dish Cleanup: Piece of Cake
I rate my recipe cleanups on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 is only a handful of dishes, and 5 is everything including the kitchen sink.
This pomegranate margarita cocktail recipe has a cleanup rating of a 1. You’ll need a shaker, a jigger, a knife, and a juicer of some kind. A small cutting board will also be helpful if you’re cutting a lot of limes for multiple cocktails!
